3 Tips for a Successful Freelance Writing Career

When people think about freelance writing as a career, imaginations run wild.

We all sit around in our pajamas and fuzzy slippers, occasionally sip gourmet coffee and head to the beach any time we feel like it.  Don't we?

Sort-of.  When I lived in Hawaii, I went to the beach as often as I could - but I never drink gourmet coffee and I dress for work when I'm working.

That's all up to you, though - have your freelance writing career any way you like it.

There are 3 important ingredients for a successful freelance writing career, though, whether you spend most of your time at home, at the coffee shop or at the beach.

Successful Freelance Writing Career Tip 1

Market your freelance writing career like crazy.  Even when you're busy.  You can meet business owners face-to-face, scour job postings or post your ads online.  The key is never stopping your marketing efforts - especially if you want your freelance writing career to grow.

Successful Freelance Writing Career Tip 2

Set reasonable freelance writing fees.  In order to be considered reasonable, your fees must:

  • be a good living wage
  • reflect your ability
  • fit what clients are willing to pay

If your fees are too low, you're going to get burned out.  If your fees are too high, no one will want to pay you.

Successful Freelance Writing Career Tip 3

Never miss a deadline.  Freelance writers who miss deadlines quickly lose the opportunity to miss the next one - it's just bad business.  Set your deadlines appropriately by thinking ahead.  If a client wants something that you can't do, be honest and tell them; otherwise, you run the risk of losing a lot of business.
